On spring break, I went to Florida with my family TO HUNT FOR FOSSILS!!!! We took a swamp buggy to Joshua Creek with Chris from Fossil Recovery Exploration. We passed by an old alligator farm, but it had no alligators in it. Then we had to walk the rest of the way to our site in cold waist deep water.
When we arrived at our site, we started looking.
We stopped by the shore near the curve in the river far back in the photo. Then we started to dump shovelfulls of gravel onto sifters until we found fossils.
It did not take long to find fossils: I found a handful of horse teeth, a bunch of turtle shell pieces, some shark teeth, dugong bone fragments, and a few megalodon shark teeth, and a camel tooth. I also found a large chunk of mammoth tooth!!
The horse teeth were only large flakes of the full tooth.
The turtle shell pieces were mostly from the carapace, with some being from the plastrum.
I found about a handful of small to medium sized shark teeth. Most of them were from the lemon shark and bull shark.
I found about 2 handfuls of dugong bones in all the places I dug.
I also found some megalodon shark teeth, one of them was full and only chipped in some places. Another one was in perfect condition and could have been placed in a museum. The third one was a half of the tooth with no root, but it was still amazing to find such a tooth.
I also found a camel tooth. At first, I thought it was a horse tooth, but after inspecting it, it turned out to be a camel tooth.
The mammoth tooth I found was partly sticking from a mound of sand. I thought it was a rock. When I checked the stone, it was a mammoth tooth!!!
Молодец, отличный пост – очень интересно! Флорида отличное место для фоссилов – на одном сайте: мегалодон – океан, верблюд – жара, мамонт – холод, черепахи – морские или пресноводные или сухопутные? Да, ещё и акулы! Интересной геологической жизнью живет Флорида! :))
