My first eastern kingbird

We went to Huntley Meadows and I saw a lot of eastern kingbirds. An eastern kingbird is a tyrant flycatcher. Tyrant flycatchers are a group of birds from the family Tyrannidae. They specialize in catching flies. They are similar because they all have whiskers at the back of their bill because they catch flying insects at top speed, so the insects might break and the bug’s legs might fly into the eyes of the bird.

I noticed it when I saw a white dot flying around a dead tree. I took out my camera, photographed it, saw the photo up close and then realized it was a kingbird! After that, I saw 4 more.

Eastern kingbirds are medium-large flycatchers in the genus Tyrannus. They like to live in deciduous woodlands, swamps, and forests around rivers and lakes. They like to eat only insects and berries. Their body is gray, the tail is black with a white tip, their belly is white-light yellow (See gallery), and their head is black with a gray and white chin. they also have a one-feather crest that is red (Not in pictures).

We saw many other birds in Huntley Meadows, like:

  1. Great blue heron
  2. Killdeer
  3. Wild turkey
  4. Lesser yellowlegs
  5. Canada goose
  6. Solitary sandpiper
  7. Least sandpiper
  8. Little blue heron
  9. Great egret
  10. Osprey
  11. Northern cardinal

I will blog about these soon!!!!
