Animals that live in parks: Pheasant

Ring-Necked Pheasant flying in the air

Pheasants are not native to North America. They were imported from England to the Americas, from farms and released on purpose. They lived here for 150 years. And they now live in Virginia.

Male Ring-necked pheasants have long tails to attract females. They have stripy wings, a red and green neck with a white ring, and brown body.

I saw one flying over the creek at the Highlands park. It looked like this:

You are very lucky with the observation of animals. How do you manage to see them?

I love reading about the animals you observe in nature. Do female pheasants look different than male pheasants?

Thank you! They are different. Male pheasants have long tails and females don’t. Males have bright colors: green, red, white, and blue in addition to brown, but females are mostly brown with black polka dots.

Wow! I have never seen a pheasant in the wild! It should have been exciting… 🙂
