Female crayfish I found

It was the weekend, so we went to the Highlands park and I had the idea to go fishing. I zoomed to the stream with my net, swung my net, and got a giant fish!!! I caught fish in my every net swing, and I walked around the stream, waiting for my family to unpack.

Then we walked around the stream, and grandma screamed, “crayfish!” I ran into the stream. I searched for it, found it, and caught it using my hands!!

This is a video of the first crayfish I caught that day.

Female spinycheek crayfish

There are many species of crayfish. There is the white river crayfish, scorpion mud lobster, spinycheek crayfish, rusty crayfish, black creek crayfish, painted crayfish, the ultra rare purple galaxy crayfish, and more. There is about 500 crayfish species in the world, and 640 breeds. That is a lot of crayfish!

Fast fact: A new species of blue burrowing crayfish was found in Ohio after a 45-YEAR search!

That day, I found two crayfish: male and female. These pictures show comparison between the sexes. The one on the right is the male, and the one on the left is a female. The differences are… the male is more colorful than the female, the female has smaller claws than a male, and the male uses his claws to fight with other males.

Right now, in October, is the second breeding season of crayfish here and the males are tougher and more colorful than usual. We released all fish and crayfish when we were done looking at them.

One of my goals is to find a sapphire crayfish. They are ultra rare, only one in a million crayfish are blue.
