North Carolina Wildlife: Common Raccoon

The racoon that was drinking from the pool (clue: One of its legs is wet)

At 9:30, This raccoon came for a morning drink out of the pool! It took a few gulps, looked at us, and carelessly walked away.

It was a rare chance to see this moment because raccoons are nocturnal, meaning they only come out at night.

Racoons are small-medium sized mammals with five fingers, like a human. They are omnivores and eat almost anything they can find, including fish, crayfish, bird eggs, berries, fish, fledglings, leaves, and trash. They rinse their food in water, if it is nearby, to soften it before eating. The “bandit mask” is the main identification feature of this elusive species. They can also sneak into houses through dog doors and footage has been taken how it steals a RUG!

This mammal also has sharp canine teeth like dogs! They use these to tear apart the fish they catch. They can acrobatically climb up trees and steal seeds from bird feeders.

Hello, Jonathan! I came to your blog and this was the first post I saw. I had fun reading this, and also reading about the Red-Winged Blackbird. In fact, a little birdie told me that tomorrow is a very special day… Happy Happy Birthday to you!! I hope you have loads of fun tomorrow celebrating all that you have grown to be. I look forward to hearing all about the rest of your summer and into the fall here on your blog! Love you! And tell Zoe I said hello and I hope she is doing well!
